The Espadin Party – An Herbal Mezcal Cocktail with Chareau

March 1, 2018

Can you tell we’re on a mezcal kick? We’re obsessed with the subtle flavors in this spirit (read about it some more here) and have not had luck finding much inspiration on how to mix it with. So, like most mixologists, we’ve been playing around with what we have in our home bar. Our other obsession, Chareau (an aloe liquor) adds a refreshing sweetness to anything it’s mixed with so we wanted to marry those two together. The first iteration of this drink was made using Del Maguey Vida mezcal, lime, Chareau, and Yellow Chartreuse but the honey notes in the Yellow Chartreuse collided with the flavor of the Chareau. We then substituted Green Chartreuse for Yellow Chartreuse and the herbal sharpness of the Green Chartreuse let the roundedness of Chareau come out while bringing everything together but the drink lacked some sweetness. We liked the ratio of mezcal and Chareau at this point, so adding more Chareau wasn’t going to work. We could have added some agave nectar, but instead, we decided to substitute Del Maguey Crema for the Vida. The Crema is a combination of mezcal and agave nectar so the spirit is sweeter than other mezcals. If you don’t have Crema laying around, you can play around with Vida and sweeten with a small amount of agave nectar.

The Espadin Party
  • 2 oz Del Maguey Crema mezcal
  •  3/4 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz Chareau
  • 1/2 oz Green Chartreuse

Combine all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake. Strain into a coupe. Take a lime peel and spray the oils on top of the cocktail by curling it. Garnish the drink with the peel and serve.
